1987/88

The year 1987/88 saw Willie Flavin become the tenth President of Dungarvan Lions Club, while Paul Clerkin stayed for another year as Secretary. At the Annual Dinner a 10th Birthday cake was produced!

Club members put in a huge effort for the Over 55s Talent Show, trawling all of West Waterford to unearth talent for the TV Show.

The year saw a switch from the Lions Club/2FM Food Appeal to an appeal run by Waterford and Dungarvan Lions Clubs in liaison with WLRfm. In later years this became the biggest annual Fundraiser, known as the Lions Club/WLRfm Christmas Appeal. Waterford club had an existing relationship with the radio station, but this was the first time Dungarvan had become involved.

A nice addition to the Christmas Swim was the provision of post swim soup provided by the Clonea Strand Hotel. Johnny Lynch took up this duty some time later - and was still warming up the "Brave and Foolish" on Christmas morning for 25 years after.

Paddy Gordon was to the fore again in promoting the Lions doctrine, by involvement in a meeting sponsored by Youghal Club (which itself had been sponsored by Dungarvan) in Midleton with a view to forming a club there - which came to pass shortly afterwards.

During the year smoke alarms were purchased and installed in the homes of some senior citizens.

At this stage the Club was receiving many requests for support, both financially and otherwise, and with its many fundraisers was in a position to look favourably at most.  Apart from the fundraisers mentioned above, other activities included the Carriglea Summer outing, Gala Night, Mosney Holiday, Cabaret, Annual Dinner, Hospital visits, Cycle Tour and Senior Citizens outing.

At the handover meeting at year end, we had a visit from a UK club visitor. It was interesting to hear of their activities.
