1978/79

Dungarvan Lions Club came into being in 1978, having been sponsored by Clonmel Club. The small band of enthusiasts (wisely) elected Derry Twomey as the Club's first President. Paddy Gordon was the first Secretary. The Club was chartered on 18th May 1978.

Its first year, under Derry's stewardship proved to be very active.

Looking over the minutes of that year the following activities are recorded:

• Summer outing for St. John's School and Carriglea Training Centre
• A Race Night was held on 22nd September
• The first Cabaret Night of Dungarvan Lions Club was held on 31st October at Minnies featuring the Janaczech Sisters and Michael Cleary. £1,730 was raised. This event ran in Dungarvan for almost 20 years thereafter.
• A Christmas Fund Committee raised £325 and £200 was sent to Famine Relief
• A Charity Fund Golf Competition was held in Dungarvan Golf Club.
• On Easter Sunday a Charity Cycle was held
• The new Club had a visit from District Governor Bill Moloney - he must have been impressed.

What an amount of activities for the fledgling club! It must be noted that Derry did not rest on his laurels - he continued to be a very active member of the club for many, many years afterwards.
